Evaluation of the Texas Technology Immersion Project (eTxTIP)

About eTxTIP

An important companion to the Technology Immersion Project (TIP) is the evaluation of TIP, known as eTxTIP.  Under eTxTIP, the researchers at the Texas Center for Educational Research are conducting an evaluation of 44 middle school campuses.  Half of these middle school campuses (22) are sites that are implementing one of the TIP technology immersion packages.  The other sites (22) are control campuses not implementing a technology immersion package.  Visit the eTxTIP Project to learn more.

Research Design

The purpose of eTxTIP is to conduct a scientifically based evaluation designed to assess the impact of immersion on campus culture, teacher professional behavior and efficacy, and student behavior, attitudes and performance.  The eTxTIP project is a multi-year research effort funded by the US Department of Education and is one of the largest studies of its kind ever conducted in education technology.  The project uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods in a quasi experimental design to follow students and teachers in the 44 middle school campuses.  Students in grade 6 are the targeted cohort for the duration of the evaluation study and will be followed through grades 7, 8, and beyond.

Research Results

The eTxTIP project has released its first report of findings on the effects of technology immersion in schools.  This report is based on the first year's worth of data collected by the project.  Among the more interesting findings:  technology immersion has a significant positive impact on student attitudes, behavior, and disciplinary actions.  Very positive community engagement and support for campuses where immersion is being implemented is also evident.  Findings regarding the impact of technology immersion on student achievement are neutral at the present.  Researchers are in the process of analyzing a second year of data, and will continue gathering data for several more years.  Several reports are available highlighting Year 1 findings.  These include:
